A jury headed by Chinese director Zhang Yimou will give an award to one of 13 Asian films in the main competition, none of which have been announced as submissions by their countries of origin. Films competing for the award include Nanako Hirose’s “Between Two Lovers,” Gu You’s “The First Taste of Loneliness,” Eddie Cahyono’s “My Mother,” Majid Majidi’s “Midday Meal,” Yosep Anggi Noen’s “The Sea Speaks His Name” and Kim Jung-hoon’s “Shaving.”

Normally, a film would need to have a theatrical release in its home country between Oct. 1, 2025 and September 30, 2026, which wouldn’t be possible for the movies having their world premieres in Busan. But that requirement is waived for films that qualify by winning festival awards, so the Busan winner will receive an extension to file paperwork to enter the race, and will not need a theatrical release.

 Read Next
Where Does the Best Picture Oscar Race Stand After the Lackluster Festivals?

At the deadline for entry, contenders include Romania’s “Fjord,”
