While James Gunn tinkers away on his “Superman” sequel “Man of Tomorrow,” the writer-director is already at work on his next film.

“Already in it,” Gunn wrote Sunday on Threads when asked if he was writing his next feature. “I had to do something while I was waiting for the assembly!!”

The filmmaker wrapped principal photography on his follow-up to “Superman” in August and is now deep into the post-production process. The follow-up, which sees David Corenswet return to star in a story that will see the DC Comics superhero forced to team up with his adversary Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), is set to release on July 9. The sequel will also star Adria Arjona in a mysterious role and sees the return of cast members like Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisondo and Edi Gathegi, as well as Aaron Pierre, who recently debuted as the superpowered John Stewart in HBO Max’s “Lanterns.”

What comes after “Man of Tomorrow” for Gunn is anyone’s guess, though the project will likely stay within the DC Comics universe that kicked off with “Superman.” Gunn, a co-chairman of DC Studios with Peter Safran, is spearheading a new “cinematic universe” featuring DC characters across film and television. Both execs are set to remain at the helm of the banner as its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, is set to be acquired by Paramount-Skydance in a landmark $111 billion deal later this week.

Since “Superman” successfully launched with $618 million at the global box office, the DC Universe’s follow-up, “Supergirl,” bombed with $126 million worldwide. Up next in the franchise is the more modestly budgeted horror “Clayface,” which debuts Oct. 23. But it’s the performance of “Man of Tomorrow” that will likely indicate the long-term direction of DC Studios, with the new owners of Skydance in place.

“Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” writer-director Bassam Tariq teamed with Mahershala Ali on the original action thriller after the pair’s effort to launch a “Blade” reboot for the Marvel Cinematic Universe fell apart. While the troubled project never came to fruition, Tariq still defended Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige.

“I want to be clear: I like Kevin,” Tariq told Vulture in an interview published Friday. “He’s a good dude. I really dislike all this s–t about like, ‘Marvel fumbled this. F–k Kevin Feige.’ No, man. He’s got a lot on his plate, too much. And I think we also had this impossible task of trying to compete with the first superhero movie, which is Wesley Snipes’s iconic ‘Blade.’ It’s really such a massive undertaking in a way that affected so many people.”

Ali was announced as the lead of a “Blade” reboot at Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con panel in 2019, taking on the role of the vampire-slaying superhero that Wesley Snipes first played through a trilogy of features from 1998 to 2004.

But the film never emerged from development, with Tariq joining in 2021 before departing in 2022. The unproduced feature went through another director, Yann Demange; set and delayed several release dates; and attached names like Delroy Lindo, Aaron Pierre and Mia Goth. But the project has been all but nixed at Marvel Studios. Snipes even returned to play Blade before Ali ever got to play the role on screen, with the former franchise star making a cameo in 2024’s “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

Ali has been forward with his criticism of the failed “Blade” reboot, telling GQ that Feige “should feel that way” when asked about the Marvel head calling the unproduced project the “biggest failure of his career.”

Tariq ended up working with Ali on his hitman feature “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,” now playing in theaters. When asked whether he knows if Feige has seen the feature, Tariq told Vulture, “I don’t know. I hope he does … I’d love to talk to him if he sees it.”

The Daily Wire was ordered to halt filming on “Pawn Shop,” a thriller centered on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer that has been reported to draw inspiration from the January killing of activist Renée Good by ICE.

During a special meeting called by the city commission of Livingston, Mont. on Saturday, a motion to suspend the production’s permit was passed after hearing concerns about the shoot’s disruption to local businesses and its failure to communicate street closures, fire engine bookings and other processes to the community.

At the end of the meeting, a commission chair member introduced “a motion to immediately temporarily suspend Bonfire Pawn Shop, LLC’s permit while seeking legal opinion from the city attorney in a timely manner to amend, suspend or revoke the permit to come back to the commission, not after 5 p.m. on Oct. 5.”

“It is crystal clear that Livingston residents and businesses were not adequately informed in advance about the street closures and the disruptive nature of the filming activity that took place in the neighborhoods with the city-permitted filming,” a citizen said during the meeting, adding that clients of the town’s food resource center faced “intimidation” from “production company security personnel, that looked very much like paramilitary.”

Filming on “Pawn Shop” had been scheduled to conclude in Livingston on Oct. 10, per reports. The Daily Wire did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the permit suspension and prospective plans to continue production.

In a statement released Thursday, the Livingston Food Resource Center wrote that its attendance hit an eight-week low during filming.

“Since filming began across the street from our building, road closures and armed security guards have increased the barriers to accessing food. Our clients deserve to feel unequivocally safe accessing this essential resource,” the statement reads. “We were not notified of the plans to film. The LFRC learned how filming would affect our mission only when staff called the city to inquire, and there was no part of the permit process that allowed us to object or advocate for our clients, as the permit had already been issued and filming was due to start that week.”

“Pawn Shop” has also drawn local protests while shooting, with signage and social media posts calling out the story’s “pro-ICE” slant and the production’s failure to alert local residents of filming.

The Bulwark obtained a leaked script of the film, reporting that the film’s story kicks off when an ICE agent shoots and kills “a fat blue-hair” woman wearing a “covid mask,” after she fatally strikes another agent with her car. The ICE agent then takes shelter from a mob of activists in a local pawn shop.

The post ‘Digger’ Gets Crushed With $20 Million Global Opening at Box Office appeared first on TheWrap.

]]>
This week’s wide releases are getting very tepid reception from critics and audiences, but their box office outlooks are very different as Amazon MGM’s Colleen Hoover adaptation “Verity” is set to turn at least a modest theatrical profit while Warner Bros./Legendary’s “Digger” looks fated to become one of the biggest busts of the year.

“Digger” carries a budget of at least $125 million, with some reports putting it at around $160 million. Either way, it’s a terrible start for the Alejandro Inarritu-directed satire with a domestic opening of $8 million and a global opening weekend of just $20 million, bringing an unceremonious end to Warner Bros.’ 103-year run as it merges with Paramount Skydance this week.

“Digger” has divided critics and audiences alike with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 51% critics and 70% audience, a C+ on CinemaScore and 47% “definite recommend” from PostTrak, the sort of scores that might be the makings of a cult film among cinephiles but are poison to a film’s efforts to attract the theatrical audience needed for a film of this budget level. And for Tom Cruise, who was pegged by awards prognosticators as a potential Oscar nominee, this is his worst opening weekend since the 2007 Robert Redford war drama “Lions for Lambs.”

Despite that, Cruise expressed his pride in “Digger” on social media and his gratitude to the film’s cast and crew in a social media post on Saturday. “I am so honored to have had the opportunity to create this film alongside such talented artists. Thank you to the entire cast and crew for your dedication, hard work, and joy. The experience was truly unforgettable and I’m so proud of what we created,” he wrote.

“Verity,” a thriller starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson that carries a much lower $40 million budget, is earning an estimated $32.6 million from 3,510 locations. From that launch point, the film should be able to get past the break-even point, but it is well shy of the $50 million opening of last year’s Sony-released Hoover hit “It Ends With Us.”

Nor is “Verity” earning reception as strong as “It Ends With Us,” taking a C+ on CinemaScore and a 50% “Definite Recommend” score on PostTrak from an audience that is 78% female and 62% between the ages of 25-44.

It’s an audience breakdown similar to Warner Bros.’ “Practical Magic 2,” which didn’t go far after its $30 million opening last weekend and is just now passing $100 million worldwide with $64.7 million domestic. “Verity,” which is leaving many moviegoers cold with its rug-pull ending, could be similarly frontloaded.

Among holdovers, Sony’s “Resident Evil” is leading with $12.5 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to $125 million as it passes $225 million worldwide. It is on pace to pass the $270 million global total of director Zach Cregger’s 2025 hit “Weapons.”

Paramount’s “Heart of the Beast” is in third with $11 million in its second weekend as the Brad Pitt/David Ayer survival thriller continues its climb to break-even with a total of $38.3 million domestic and $98.7 million worldwide after 10 days in theaters against an $80 million production budget before marketing costs.

A24’s “Primetime” is in a virtual tie with “Digger” for the No.4 spot on the box office charts with $8 million in its second weekend, bringing the $15 million drama about the downfall of “To Catch a Predator” to $34 million domestic.

Finally, Universal/DreamWorks’ “Forgotten Island” isn’t getting the legs it needs to escape bomb status with a $7.2 million second weekend with less than $1 million from five new overseas openings. Despite strong critical and audience reception, it now stands with a woeful $38.4 million global total against an $80 million production budget.

The post ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Takes Back the All-Time Box Office Record From ‘Avatar’ After ‘Encore’ Reissue appeared first on TheWrap.

]]>
After two more weekends of play with its “Encore” reissue, “Avengers: Endgame” has added $126 million to its lifetime gross, enough to take back the unadjusted record for the highest grossing film of all time from “Avatar.”

With $36.2 million domestic and $89.8 million overseas, “Endgame Encore” has pushed the film’s global lifetime gross to $2.92 billion, just passing the same figure as James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi epic. It also pushes the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s franchise gross total going back to the 2008 launch title “Iron Man” to a staggering $35 billion.

And another $2 billion-plus could well be on the way this December with “Avengers: Doomsday” this December, which has already racked up close to $60 million in presales according to theatrical sources. The hype for “Doomsday” helped “Endgame” take back the all-time record, as “Endgame Encore” featured a tweaked ending and three new mid-credit and post-credit scenes connected to the upcoming blockbuster.

As TheWrap reported last week, “Avengers”-mania has also crossed over with efforts across the movie theater industry to renovate their multiplexes, with Cinema United reporting $2.7 billion in refurbishment spending over the past two years.

With its new Infinity Vision campaign, Disney and Marvel Studios have sought to guide moviegoers to other premium formats to watch “Doomsday” on as the film will not screen on Imax for at least the first three weeks of its theatrical run. Several exhibitors have told TheWrap that they have accelerated their plans to upgrade sound systems and projectors to take part in Infinity Vision, as 70% of the presales for “Doomsday” have come through the campaign.

‘A Statement’ Review: Tom McCarthy’s Climate Change Dramedy Is a Period Piece That Slyly Meets Our Moment https://www.thewrap.com/creative-content/movies/a-statement-review-tom-mccarthy-climate-change-dramedy/ https://www.thewrap.com/creative-content/movies/a-statement-review-tom-mccarthy-climate-change-dramedy/#respond Sun, 04 Oct 2026 00:15:00 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=8090244 New York Film Festival 2026: Paul Giamatti and John Turturro star in an entirely engaging film made from bureaucrats’ transcripts

The post ‘A Statement’ Review: Tom McCarthy’s Climate Change Dramedy Is a Period Piece That Slyly Meets Our Moment appeared first on TheWrap.

]]>
On Oct. 30, 1980, 20 experts got together at the Don CeSar Hotel in St. Petersburg, Fla., to address the impact of CO2 emissions on the climate. What they managed to prove is what every social scientist already knows: If there’s a chance for people to get in their own way, they’ll knock each other over to grab it.

This, ultimately, is the statement Tom McCarthy (“Spotlight”) aims to make with “A Statement.” And unlike his hapless protagonists, he handily succeeds.

The movie is based on true events documented by journalist Nathaniel Rich in his 2019 book “Losing Earth: A Recent History,” but McCarthy and his collaborators, including co-writers Thomas Bidegain and Noé Debré, dig so deep into the data that they create a sort of scientific experiment themselves. Nearly every line of dialogue was lifted verbatim from the panel’s hundreds of pages of transcripts, and it’s delivered in a setting that feels almost forensically accurate.

The most optimistic member of this cohort is moderator Tom Jorling (Paul Rudd), who has gathered everyone to alert the world to the growing environmental emergency. He’s organized four sessions over two days, during which the group can hash out the language, reach a consensus and bring their pronouncement straight to Congress.

He has not, however, accounted for the impact of each personality. MIT nuclear engineer David Rose (John Turturro), for example, arrives with reams of evidence that society is unable to shift fast enough to make changes worthwhile. Energy Department representative David Slade (Paul Giamatti) is ready to pour cold water on any ideas he knows Congress will reject. Ecologist George Woodwell (Dylan Baker) and environmentalist Rafe Pomerance (Evan Peters) cannot stomach the thought of compromise, while meteorologist John Perry (Jason Clarke) sees himself as a practical gadfly, the one sane voice amid so much overreaction. Meanwhile, public health scholar Annemarie Crocetti (Amy Ryan) observes in dismayed silence, simultaneously overlooked and appalled by the men peacocking around her.

It is almost inconceivable that a funny, suspenseful and entirely engaging film could be made out of the transcripts of bureaucrats arguing over words like “prudence,” “jurisdiction” and “mandates.” But wisely, McCarthy leans so far in that he allows us to become participants as well.

We can smell the smoke in the amber ashtrays, see the dust hovering around the slide projector, taste the lukewarm letdown of a chafing-dish meal. Anyone who’s been in a never-ending meeting or had to hide their annoyance at a misguided colleague will feel this experience in their bones. But it’s to McCarthy’s credit that anyone who hasn’t will, too.

In many ways, he approaches the project like a play, keeping the setting tight and bringing in the highest-level performers to distinguish each role. It’s no coincidence that the most experienced actors handle this difficult task with the greatest ease. Turturro, Clarke and Giamatti are particularly compelling as three versions of men whose flaws blind them in different ways. In contrast, Peters and Tatiana Maslany (as a legal scholar) don’t settle in as comfortably; they play their parts rather than embodying them.

Then again, none of the women are fully integrated into the film, an unfortunate irony given the blatant sexism their characters experienced in real life. McCarthy’s intention to acknowledge this egregious treatment is clear each time one of them hesitantly raises her hand or is silenced by an interruption. But when he takes them out of the meeting, he fumbles, turning them into representations and plot devices. This is particularly true for Bernadette (Nina Arianda), the stenographer tasked with both enlightening and kissing awkward young scientist Robert (Noah Robbins).

Mostly, however, he gets the details just right. This is never easy; too many contemporary dramas set during the ’70s and ’80s make a joke out of how old-fashioned everything feels. In contrast, production designer John P. Goldsmith and costume designer Melissa Toth do a fantastic job recreating a very specific moment with legitimate sincerity. Sure, the ever-present cigarettes and emissions-spewing muscle cars make a point. But it’s the layered approach that’s most impressive: the heavy hotel curtains, rumpled short-sleeve button-downs, limp lunch salads.

Best of all, though, are the timeless truths that emerge from this era-specific artifact, through the interpersonal dynamics and self-serving perspectives that each member brings to the table. Nearly 50 years on, it’s clear that climate change was inevitable. So the question McCarthy winds up handing us is even bigger: Is there any hope for human nature?

Tom Cruise isn’t ready to call “Digger” a lost cause, even after the film stumbled out of the gate at the box office.

The actor shared behind-the-scenes photos from the film’s production Saturday, thanking the cast and crew for their hard work. “Digger” marked something of a return for Cruise, who has spent the past decade or so largely committed to blockbusters and action filmmaking and seemed to be returning to a role closer to his work in “Magnolia” or even “Tropic Thunder.” Many are also calling the film a clear awards play for Cruise, who has won an honorary Oscar but has never taken home one of the Academy’s acting trophies.

In the film, Cruise plays a powerful oil tycoon named Digger Rockwell whose arrogance and greed trigger a global catastrophe. Digger is then tasked by the president (John Goodman) with “digging us out” of the mess he created. The film has generated a lot of conversation about what its true plot is. You can read spoilers here.

“’Digger; is officially in theaters and I am so honored to have had the opportunity to create this film alongside such talented artists,” the actor posted on X Saturday. “Thank you to the entire cast and crew for your dedication, hard work, and joy. The experience was truly unforgettable and I’m so proud of what we created.”

Despite his enthusiasm, the film opened to less than stellar numbers at the box office. The film fell to a $7.5 million opening after grossing just $3.4 million from 3,321 locations, including Imax support. For “Digger,” the box office outlook is even worse given that the film has a budget of at least $125 million, with some reports putting it at $160 million or higher. A film that has Oscar hopes for lead star Cruise, known over the past decade and a half for his box office performance, will instead become his lowest opening weekend since the 2007 film “Lions for Lambs,” a war drama he starred in alongside Robert Redford and Meryl Streep and which opened to $6.7 million.

One person chiming in with their thoughts is director Guillermo del Toro, who took to social media to share his take on it.

“Entirely Petty headline,” the director wrote in a Thursday post. “Love it or not. And, yes, I do. The film delivers in scale, ambition and reach at a theatrical screen level. Daring, bold and Cinematically complex. Decidedly a Theatrical experience.”

Directed by Alejandro Inarritu, “Digger” has firmly divided critics and audiences alike, earning a C+ on CinemaScore and earning Rotten Tomatoes scores of 51% critics and 71% audience. Its reception is similar to a high-profile bomb from Warner’s new owners, Paramount’s “Babylon,” which only made $65.2 million worldwide but gained a cult following among some hardcore movie lovers.
